The Florida-based Chief of Pediatric Head & Neck Surgeon at AdventHealth for Children, Dr. Lopez, made history as the country’s first dual fellowship-trained head and neck surgeon and pediatric craniofacial surgeon. As the father of two young boys, Dr. Lopez believes access to the best quality care should be a right for all children, not just the privileged few. He has applied his deep passion for improving the lives of children with craniofacial anomalies and cancer to acquire multidisciplinary skills and refine his expertise in research methodology/innovation to find novel treatments for pediatric patients with complex conditions.
Setting a strong, trusted foundation
After completing his undergraduate education at Stanford University, Dr. Lopez earned his medical degree at Harvard Medical School. While at Harvard, he also obtained an MBA with a concentration in Healthcare Management. Next, residencies awaited him at Johns Hopkins Hospital (in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery) and the University of Maryland (at the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center). Dr. Lopez was honored with the Betsy Winter House Staff Award during his Pediatric Craniomaxillofacial Surgery fellowship at Yale-New Haven Children’s Hospital. He continued his fellowship training at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York, specializing in Head and Neck Surgical Oncology, and at the Hospital Universitario 12 de Octubre in Madrid, Spain, where he participated in an Oral and Maxillofacial Travel Fellowship.
A real commitment to global change
A thread that weaves through Dr. Lopez’s career is his dedication to improved health outcomes for children worldwide. Each year, he spends two weeks volunteering to perform surgeries for children with cleft lips and palates in underserved communities through the AdventHealth Sharing Smiles Foundation. Dr. Lopez is a prolific researcher who has published over 180 peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, and publications. His research in tissue engineering has led to advancements in bone regeneration techniques. Notably, Dr. Lopez has established clinical treatment algorithms for pediatric facial trauma. He has cemented his reputation as a leading authority in craniofacial surgery as the head of the Children’s Cranio-Oncology Laboratory, which spearheads cutting-edge 3-D printing and product development for surgical applications, and as the co-author of Computer-assisted Planning in Craniofacial Surgery with Elsevier.
