Dr. Julie Karen is a board certified dermatologist who specializes in Mohs micrographic surgery, laser surgery, skin cancer, and the treatment of leg veins. Dr. Karen graduated summa cum laude from Princeton University, where she was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and played varsity soccer. She received her medical degree from the Weill Medical College of Cornell University where she was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha, the national medical honors society, and graduated first in her class and received the Janet M. Glasgow Memorial Award given to the top female graduate. She completed her residency training at The Ronald O. Perelman Department of Dermatology at New York University Medical Center where she served as Chief Resident and received the Morris Leider Award for Excellence in Dermatology. Dr. Karen completed a Procedural Dermatology Fellowship at NYU and Memorial Sloan-Kettering. Dr. Karen is certified by the American Board of Dermatology. She is also a Fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology, the American College of Mohs Surgery, the American College of Phlebology, the American Society of Dermatologic Surgery and the American Society for Laser Medicine & Surgery. She is affiliated with New York University Langone Medical Center, where she is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Dermatology and teaches surgery to the dermatology residents. Dr. Karen is a Castle Connolly Top Doctor and was again elected to New York Super Doctors in 2015, which appears in the The New York Times Magazine. Dr. Karen has received the Surgical Attending of the Year Award from NYU’s dermatology residents. Dr. Karen has published numerous articles and chapters in the field of dermatology, including publications in the New England Journal of Medicine, Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, and Archives of Dermatology. Recently, she co-authored the Handbook of Dermatologic Surgery with her sister Dr. Elizabeth Hale and the renowned Dr. Perry Robins, which is used to train dermatology residents. She has appeared on television numerous times and has been quoted in many print and online publications.

Dr. Karen is everything you’d want in a dermatologist. She is astute, personable and warm with deft surgical skills and a keen aesthetic eye. She is beloved by her patients and colleagues alike. It is hard to get in to see her, but she is well worth the wait!
