Dr. Wilsa M.S. Charles Malveaux completed her BA and MA in Psychology at Stanford University (Palo Alto, CA,) and her Medical Degree at Howard University in Washington D.C. She completed her residency training in psychiatry at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), San Fernando Valley Site, where she was a Chief Resident in her final year. Dr. Charles Malveaux has received numerous awards and accolades, including the Outstanding Teaching Resident for her program, the prestigious SAMHSA Fellowship from the American Psychiatric Association (APA) and for four years (2014-2018), served on the APA’s Council for Advocacy and Government Relations (CAGR). She has advocated for patients’ rights to equal coverage for mental health treatment under healthcare parity laws, and for healthcare reform to increase access to psychiatric care for those in need. Dr. Charles Malveaux has presented at national and international medical and scientific conferences on the experience of injury and failure in athletes, the stigma of psychiatry among various minorities, and use of social media to educate underserved populations. Dr. Charles Malveaux, a former elite athlete, has a special focus on Sports Psychiatry, the after effects of traumatic brain injuries, mood disorders, and helping with life/career transitions. She has successfully worked with athletes of varying stages of their career from college scholarship athletes, to professional, and retired athletes. Dr. Wilsa Charles Malveaux currently lends her expertise as a psychiatric consultant to the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA). A dedicated professional described by colleagues as “caring”, “very open minded”, “selfless”; she is well known for her attention to detail. Dr. Charles Malveaux believes in a holistic approach to patient management with individualized treatment plans incorporating both psychotherapy and medication management options. Dr. Charles Malveaux enjoys spending time with her family, music, fitness, yoga, and the outdoors. She speaks English, Jamaican Patois, and Spanish.

Dr. Wilsa Charles-Malveaux is a kind physician and person who is dedicated to serving her patients. She spends significant time and effort in the fight to decrease stigma of mental illness, especially in minority populations, where the need is greatest. In addition, she works to reduce the stigma of mental illness in the realm of sports psychiatry.

Dr. Malveaux is an amazing physician, who has an excellent bedside manner. She has a tremendous capacity for absorbing knowledge, as well as conveying knowledge in a down-to-earth fashion, and has an exceptional intuitive capacity of being able to interact with patients using both psychopharmacology and and psychotherapy.
